Daglan is a small village to the south of the Dordogne department, in the Valley of the Céou river.

Explore Daglan

France This Way review: Daglan is quite a small village and perhaps its monuments are unremarkable, but it is a pleasant village to explore as part of a tour of the countryside and villages of the Céou Valley.

Mairie in Daglan

In the centre of Daglan you will find a good number of traditional Dordogne houses built in the typical white limestone of the region. The principal historic monument in the centre of the village is the church of Saint-Martin, which retains its 13th century entrance of carved stone columns.

The most imposing building in Daglan is the mairie, a large building with a stone tower on one side, although a short distance away you will notice a much smaller building marked 'mairie' with an attractive stone entrance which is rather more attractive and presumably was the town hall at some earlier time.

If you stroll towards the river you can see a small traditional lavoir (washhouse) which is nicely restored and planted - although I suspect it is no longer used as a lavoir, unlike in some small traditional villages.

In the centre of the village you can visit Daglan tourist information office, called the Maison de la Pierre Seche (House of Dry Stone) and featuring a small exhibition of the tools traditionally used in building the local houses.

Attractions nearby

The history of architecture in the Dordogne starts thousands of years ago with the construction of small stone cabins used for shelter, and there are lots of these in the countryside around Daglan. The Maison de la Pierre Seche has a leaflet that suggests a walking route to discover the best of these.

If your children are not convinced that a walk to see old stone buildings is interesting they will be pleased to know there are lots of places along the Céou river in and near Daglan where river bathing is possible. It is also possible to canoe along the Céou towards its confluence with the Dordogne although this is most popular in February and March when the river has more water.

Céou Valley: Another village in the Céou valley that is pleasant for a quick stroll is Saint-Pompon, a few kilometres south-west of Daglan, and you can also visit Saint-Cybranet to the north and Saint-Laurent-la-Vallée to the west.

Dordogne: A short distance to the north of Daglan you can visit many of the most popular villages on the Dordogne river such as Domme, Castelnaud-la-Chapelle and La Roque-Gageac.
