Severac-le-Chateau is a small village about 20 kilometres north of Millau in the Aveyron department of southern France and within the Natural Regional Park of the Grandes Causses.
The old village of Severac-le-Chateau is on the southern slopes of a hill, where it developed below the castle that dominates the village.
Explore Severac-le-Chateau
Start your visit at the castle in Severac-le-Chateau. The castle is unusual in that it is different according to which direction you are facing - a medieval defensive structure faces towards the north, while a more comfortable renaissance addition faces towards the south. Both are equally imposing.
The castle can be visited, during which you can see the ramparts, kitchens, chapel etc and, given its hilltop position, Severac-le-Chateau castle also has very good views across the countryside.
Your visit can continue below the castle, in the medieval town of Severac-le-Chateau. Two of the four original gateways that passed through the defensive walls can still be seen: the Porte du Latazou and the Porte du Peyrou.
The town is centred around the Place de la Fontaine and the streets that run off from this central place.
It is a pleasure to explore the historic streets and to wander through the narrow alleys, passing sometimes under vaulted buildings, unchanged with the passage of the centuries - stopping to admire the occasional half-timbered medieval house or ornate building feature.
The most interesting of the medieval houses are the 15th century Maison des Consuls, which also has impressive painted ceilings inside (open summer only) and the Maison de Jeanne, one of the oldest houses in Severac-le-Chateau and also one of the most interesting with its three levels each different from the one below (although the house appears to be in need of some work).
Severac-le-Chateau tourist office can be found in the Place du Monument.
