The village of Montbrun is found towards the eastern end of the Gorges du Tarn, to the west of Florac. It is a very attractive village in a picturesque setting, with the early stages of the cliffs of the Tarn gorges rising up behind the village.

Note: this article refers to Montbrun in Lozere not Montbrun-les-Bains in the Rhone-Alpes region.

Explore Montbrun

Montbrun is a small village with little in the way of facilities and just a couple of narrow streets running along the hill separated by steps and alleys, running up the hill to the church at the top.

View of Montbrun from below village

Numerous small cottages line the alleys, almost all photogenic and here long enough to have become part of the background scenery (from a distance you would hardly notice the village, with the stone houses looking so much like part of the hillside behind them.

So, while the village is small and there are no particular monuments of great interest, Montbrun is very picturesque and you will discover nice views out across the valley in front of the village, so it well merits the detour.

One curious highlight in the village is the chance to admire the local chimneys - some of the Montbrun residents seem to have spent a lot of effort making these look interesting although I assume these chimneys are actually designed for practical reasons such as dealing with snow or wind.

France This Way note: the access road to Montbrun from the main road through the Gorges du Tarn was single-track in places, and on the edge of a steep drop - I was very glad I didn't meet anyone coming the other way. I can imagine that during a busy summer afternoon it could become quite slow to get along the road.

Attractions nearby

The Gorges du Tarn to the west of Montbrun are one of the most scenic parts of France.

There are several villages and hamlets hidden along the Gorges du Tarn, some very popular with visitors and with all facilities (such as Sainte-Enimie) while some of the smaller villages are much quieter, in part perhaps because they are a little harder to access. Castelbouc is just a few kilometres west from here and also very peaceful.

Explore elsewhere in the Massif Central. You can find more travel ideas in the Lozere guide and the Languedoc-Roussillon guide.
