France This Way review: although it is not an exceptional village, Maussane-les-Alpilles is a pleasant place for a coffee pause as you explore this spectacular region.

You will start your visit in the main square in the centre of Maussane-les-Alpilles, the Place Laugier de Monblan, with the Four Seasons Fountain at its centre.
The fountain was built in 1869 as the public fountain for the town. It is now the central meeting point for locals and visitors alike, surrounded by shady plane trees and with two cafes next to the fountain.
Next to the square you can also see the Church Sainte-Croix. This church was built for the village in the 1750s by a local lord, to help them become designated as an independent parish.
Elsewhere in the village the sights of interest include a charming public wash-house that was built in the 19th century, and three oratories.
Behind the main square there is an unusual map of France, with different stones cut to represent each department in France, in total creating a square of 25 square metres.
A short distance west of the centre, Maussane-les-Alpilles has a small historic centre called Vieux Maussane, where you can see several attractive houses, a second wash-house in a small public square, and a manor house.
The principal streets to explore in Vieux Maussane are Rue du Vieux Maussane and Rue Charloun Rieu.
The weekly market in Maussane-les-Alpilles takes place in the Place Giraud, between the centre of the village and the historic village.

Attractions nearby
There is a one hour walk through the countryside around the village, called the Parcours Flandrin, that is a good introduction to the scenery of the Alpilles. You can get more information from the Maussanne-les-Alpilles tourist office, which is on the eastern edge of the village - slightly outside the village centre so not immediately obvious - on the Avenue des Alpilles.
One of our favourite villages in France, Les Baux-de-Provence, is just a few kilometres north of Maussane and an unmissable part of your visit to this region.
Slightly further north you can visit the fascinating architectural site at Glanum, and the small Provençal town of Saint-Remy-de-Provence, while Arles to the west of here has several important Roman monuments.
You can find more travel ideas in the Bouches-du-Rhone guide and the Provence guide.
