France This Way review: The Maison Angelina is trendy, pricey and packed but come for the decor and to be steeped in history.

The Maison Angelina has been something of a Paris institution since the beginning of the twentieth century.

The tea room was opened in 1903 by Anton Rumpelmayer, a renowned Austrian confectioner. His son was given the job of running the tea rooms which he named after his wife Angeline.

It was decorated in a sumptuous Belle Epoque style with frescoes, gilded mirrors, moldings and art deco lights. The rooms were renovated in 2014 but the decor remains the same as in those early days.

The tea rooms became an instant hit with the French aristocracy and with many of the famous artists, actors and writers of the time. Marcel Proust and Coco Chanel were regular guests and Coco Chanel always asked for "her" table.

The Maison Angelina recently celebrated its 120 years anniversary.

Today the tea rooms are as popular as ever and if you want to visit you need to be prepared to queue. It has become something of an Instagram sensation and its hot chocolate in particuler is in high demand.

The hot chocolate is known as 'l'Africain' and is a blend of three cocoas from Africa in full fat milk and served with a jug of whipped cream. It is often said to be the best hot chocolate in Paris.

Its signature cake is the 'Mont Blanc' which it has been making from the beginning. It is a meringue base, topped with chantilly and covered in a blanket of chestnut-cream strands. Apparently two and a half thousand are sold each day!

There are a selection of classic cakes on offer that have long been part of the Angelina story but the current chef also offers new cakes to try out. There is also a savoury menu to choose from.

The Maison Angelina can be found at 226 Rue de Rivoli, 75001 Paris. It is open every day from roughly 07.30 to 19.00 but some days half an hour earlier or later.

If it is packed and you haven't time to join the queue there is an outdoor counter selling take-away hot chocolates.

Whilst the tea room at Rue de Rivoli is the original tea room there are several others that have opened in Paris, and indeed others around the world.

In Paris you can also find Angelina at the Chateau de Versailles and the Domaine de Trianon as well as at the Luxembourg Museum on Rue de Vaugirard and at Rue de Bac.
