Explore Ispagnac

France This Way review: Ispagnac is a very charming small village, very pleasant to explore and with a couple of notable small monuments to discover.

Main street in Ispagnac

In medieval times the population of Ispagnac was much higher than it is today, and the village was originally fortified with defensive walls and with a street called Carriero Drecho (Straight Street) running through the middle of the village. This was in the same location as the street now called Rue de la Ville, and even after 500 years it is still the main street by which you will explore the village centre.

As you walk along the Rue de la Ville through the centre of Ispagnac you will see lots of pretty houses and some unusual features such as carved gateways, and narrow alleys to either side.

At the eastern end of the street you will discover a small square (called a 'placette') with some colourful houses and a small fountain, which is very picturesque.

There is a larger square at the west end of the Rue de la Ville where you can see the village church, built in the 11th and 12th centuries. The church was originally attached to a priory and was the most important residence in Ispagnac, occupied by the Lord of the village. The priory walls formed part of the defensive fortifications of the village.

The church is built in red stone and in the Romanesque style of architecture, with a large round window in the facade. The rear of the church has retained its original round apse, with some decorative arches incorporating motifs in white stone inset in the red stone, although it is quite hard to see this because it is partly behind a wall.

Commerces are quite limited in Ispagnac but you will find a bakery, and a small restaurant and a bar. The restaurant (La Table Ronde) has limited opening hours so check in advance if you are relying on it for your meal.

Attractions nearby

Just outside the eastern edge of the village you can see a very picturesque old stone bridge across the Tarn river. The bridge has high arches, and from the centre of the bridge you have lovely views along the river.

An even smaller village, called Quezac, is two kilometres west of Ispagnac, and reached by a very lovely medieval bridge.

Ispagnac is at the west end of the Gorges du Tarn, one of the most picturesque gorges in France and where you will also find several very pretty villages.
