Castillon-du-Gard is a pretty village in the Gard department of Occitanie, not far from the Pont-du-Gard.

Explore Castillon-du-Gard

France This Way review: the centre of Castillon-du-Gard is quite small and quiet, but very attractive and interesting to explore

You will probably arrive on foot in the main square (the main parking area is slightly outside the village centre), where you will find the church as well the cafes and the mairie, and lots of traditional stone houses.

From this square, to the north (the higher end of the square) you can access the historical village with its charming narrow streets and alleys, ancient houses, stone arches and fountains.

There are only a few streets so if you spend a while exploring you can see the whole centre of Castillon-du-Gard quite easily.

There are several particularly noteworthy buildings in the centre of Castillon-du-Garde such as the ancient presbytery on Rue du Presbytère, but above all it is the ambiance of the village as a whole which is the most important attraction for visitors.

The church Saint-Christophe in the village centre is not particularly interesting, but if you follow the Chemin de Saint-Caprais, about one kilometre north-west from the centre you can see the Chapel Saint-Caprais which is a charming roman style chapel built in the 12th century (the round chevet at the rear of the chapel is very typical of roman style churches).

In the main square in Castillon-du-Gard you will find a couple of restaurants, which is a perfect place for lunch after a morning exploring the Pont-du-Gard.

On the edge of the village there is a viewpoint from where you can see the Pont-du-Gard, but it is quite a long way away so rather lost in the surrounding countryside - or perhaps my eyesight is not very good!

Attractions nearby

The area around Castillon-du-Gard is known as the Gorges du Gardon, a beautiful region of canyons and rivers, now classified as a Regional Nature Reserve (réserve naturelle régionale) and a Grand Site of France.

Apart from the natural attractions, the most important destination for visitors to this region is the remarkable Roman aquaduct called Pont-du-Gard.

There are several towns of interest nearby. The most important of these are Nimes to the south-west and Avignon to the east of here, and we love the historical centre of Uzès, north east from Castillon-du-Gard.
